Passion Projects
As a Tunisian-Palestinian American that has yet to see a true representation of Arab families on screen without being buried under overtly religious stereotypes, I created Darna, a TV Sitcom Pilot, that focuses on how fun and funny Arab families can be. It’s overall tone is Broad City meets Black-ish but with a North African family. It gives the audience a chance to connect with two relatable young women in their twenties, Nadine and Lana, while giving a voice for Arab-Americans and showing the spectrum of tradition & religion, sexuality, and mental health within a racially ambiguous, Muslim, North African family.
Darna has received 5 accolades in festivals and my next step is filming the pilot. Here is Darna’s logline:
When two chaotically fun cousins, stubborn Nadine and people-pleasing Lana, announce their decision to leave Virginia to embark on a new adventure in Los Angeles, they never expect their eccentric and clingy Arab-American family, Nadine's hippy, lesbian mother and Lana’s religious and traditional parents along with her two siblings, to uproot their lives and move in right next door. They navigate the chaos of their codependent family dynamics while chasing their dreams and finding themselves.
